The mobile Maryland sports betting market is getting ever closer to a launch, and September was further proof of what a good time of year it is for that to happen.
The retail sports betting numbers in the state rose dramatically last month compared to August, no doubt thanks to the return of football.
For now, five retail casinos take sports bets in Maryland, along with two other locations.
But online Maryland sports betting apps should be ready to go before the 2022 football season ends, giving the state a massive boost in wagering revenue as well as handle (or amount wagered).
Maryland September Wagering Breakdown
The September sports betting handle was $31,376,072 in the state, a 68.2% increase from $18,650,802 in the Maryland August revenue report.
Every facility taking retail sports wagers saw a big jump in handle. Live! Casino in Hanover led the way with $12.74 million in wagers accepted, according to Maryland Lottery and Gaming.
The other casinos with their sports betting handle were as follows: MGM National Harbor, $8.64 million; Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, $4.9 million; Hollywood Casino Perryville, $2.55 million; and Ocean Downs Casino in Berlin at $1.8 million.
Horseshoe Casino presented its case to the state for a mobile sports wagering license this month, touting its commitment to diversity in its leadership as laid out by state law.
Two other outlets started taking sports bets over the summer. BingoWorld had $708,612 in handle for September and Riverboat on the Potomac had $17,808.
The sports betting revenue, or taxable win, was $6,562,053, up 106.0% from August’s $3,185,601. The state tax derived from wagering on sports was up by the same percentage, rising from $477,840 in August to $984,308 last month.
