One of the best defensive centerfielders in the Majors resides in Baltimore. Cedric Mullins of the Orioles has amassed a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with a 2.21 range factor in 90 games this season. His defense is one of many reasons that the Baltimore Orioles playoff odds look so good.
With the seventh-year pro about to enter his final year of team control at age 29, and the O’s sitting one game ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East standings, it’s worth wondering whether general manager Mike Elias might opt to deal the veteran outfielder.
Mullins is earning just over $6.3 million after signing a one-year deal with the club to avoid arbitration during the offseason. But he has struggled mightily at the dish, with his batting average (.219, versus .251), OBP (.265, versus .315), slugging (.394, versus .423), OPS (.659, versus .738) and OPS+ (89, versus 105) trailing his career-to-date averages in Baltimore.
Whether Elias opts to part with Mullins as a piece in any deals prior to the MLB’s trade deadline on Tuesday remains to be seen. BetMaryland.com continues our Maryland sports betting coverage by developing odds to see if and where Mullins will be traded.
Team | Odds | Percent Chance |
Los Angeles Dodgers | +200 | 33.3% |
Stay w/ Baltimore Orioles | +300 | 25.0% |
Kansas City Royals | +550 | 15.4% |
Philadelphia Phillies | +1000 | 9.1% |
Toronto Blue Jays | +1750 | 5.4% |
The Field | +750 | 11.8% |
Given the success of younger outfielders such as Colton Cowser, Kyle Stowers and Heston Kjerstad in Baltimore this year and Mullins’ offensive struggles, Elias might move the 29-year-old to unclog the team’s outfield logjam. Note that the odds above are exclusive to BetMaryland. The trade deadline can lead to developments that affect odds at Maryland sportsbook apps.
Cowser has been the best of the bunch in WAR this year at 1.3. He has 13 home runs and 37 RBIs for the first-place squad, which is well ahead of Mullins’ stats to date. The 24-year-old also has experience in center, having played 26 games this season at the position and amassing a higher range factor than Mullins (2.62, versus Mullins’ 2.19).
That’s why we see the O’s being willing to move Mullins before the July 30 deadline. The National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers headline our list of teams that could land the veteran at +200. For Baltimore – with +750 odds to win the World Series at Caesars Maryland Sportsbook, our odds of keeping Mullins are at +300.
Other teams that could trade for the veteran centerfielder include the Kansas City Royals (+550), the Philadelphia Phillies (+1000) and the Toronto Blue Jays (+1750).
For now, Mullins and the O’s need to turn their attention toward getting back into the win column. Baltimore has sputtered to a 5-5 mark in their past 10 games, opening the door for the Yankees to keep pace in the ultra-competitive AL East.
