Maryland Sports Betting Sets Revenue Record in October
Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

Maryland sports betting had a rousing October with tax collected from sports betting and taxable win amounts hitting highwater marks. The 13 retail sportsbooks and 12 mobile sportsbooks combined for handle of $483.15 million, which was the second-highest all-time in the state.

Of the total handle, 95.9% came from Maryland sports betting apps. Mobile handle was about $463.50 million, including about $19.37 million in free promotional wagers.

As mentioned, October’s handle was second only to December 2022 when it was $497.12 million. It was also up 9.2% from September 2023 (almost $442.45 million).

The combined hold in October was $58.7 million (or 12.1%) and the combined taxable win was about $38.75 million. The taxable win amount was a monthly state record. The old taxable win mark was $35.40 million in March 2023.  In a month-to-month comparison, the October sports betting revenue was up 79.9% from September (about $21.42 million).

The combined sports wagering tax to the state was a record $5,812,245. That was 9.5% greater than the previous high of $5,310,057 generated in March 2023. In a month-to-month comparison, October was up 79.9% from September ($3,231,427).

5 NFL Weekend Brings Mark

The month-to-month comparative figures were influenced, in part, by five NFL Sundays on the October calendar.

“People love to bet on football, and that is certainly reflected in the handle this time of year,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin. “The Ravens’ success and college football are contributing factors, and there is a convergence of the seasons in October, with the baseball playoffs and World Series and the start of hockey and basketball. From an overall perspective, the results show that a robust market has taken shape here in Maryland and is making a steady contribution to the state’s education programs.”
