Gaming Innovation Group Qualifies For Maryland Sports Betting License
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

The Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Commission found Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) to be qualified for an online sports wagering operator license at the commission’s meeting on Thursday.

In addition to its entry into the Maryland sports betting sphere, GiG announced in a news release that it was awarded a full Interactive Gaming Manufacturer License in Pennsylvania.

The approvals come in anticipation of GiG launching new partner brands on its technology and expanding the reach of its iGaming platform and sportsbook in North America.

GiG, operating out of Malta, has already been in U.S. markets including New Jersey.

In the Old Line State, a GiG subsidiary named iGaming Cloud Inc., with a principal office in New Jersey, has entered into a service agreement with local start-up Crab Sports Maryland LLC. They will operate the Maryland betting app platforms.

“Under the terms of the agreement, iGaming Cloud Inc. will provide GiG’s player account management system and Sportnco’s wagering platform, and have exclusive rights to operate the gaming platforms,” according to a report by Maryland Lottery & Gaming’s staff, which examined iGamingCloud and GiG.

Crab Sports and GiG

Crab Sports was “awarded” an online wagering license by the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) in February. To be “issued” a license and begin accepting actual wagers, awardees must go through a final approval process with the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Commission staff. That step includes a successful controlled demonstration of operations and an adherence to state gaming procedures.

The iGaming Cloud and GiG entities are not required to go before the SWARC; their application was one of three approved by SWARC this week. Businesses found qualified as online and facility sports wagering operators do not go through the license award process and are eligible to partner with entities, such as Crab Sports, which already hold mobile or facility licenses awarded by SWARC.

“Having placed a strong focus on expansion in regulated markets, we’re understandably pleased with the confirmation of our licenses in two new US states,” said Claudio Caruana, General Counsel for GiG. “Regulation will continue to drive the industry in North America, as markets mature, allowing us to support and protect operators and their customers, establishing suitable, robust frameworks for sustainable growth.”
