After winning 11 of their final 13 regular-season games, the Maryland men’s basketball program enters this week's Big Ten tournament knowing that an NCAA Tournament bid awaits regardless of the results over the next few days.
Head coach Kevin Willard and company ended their regular season with a 74-61 road victory over Northwestern to improve to 24-7 overall, 14-6 in Big Ten play. The Terrapins clinched the No. 2 seed for the Big Ten tournament and will not have to play until Friday's quarterfinals, having earned a double bye as one of the league's top four seeds.
With that in mind, and Selection Sunday looming on March 16, BetMaryland.com broke down the odds on where Willard’s team stands for March Madness as part of our Maryland sports betting coverage.
Seed | Percentage Chance | Odds |
2 Seed | +1650 | 5.7% |
3 Seed | +260 | 27.8% |
4 Seed | +230 | 30.3% |
5 Seed | +400 | 20.0% |
6 Seed | +910 | 9.9% |
7 Seed | +2275 | 4.2% |
The Field | +4650 | 2.1% |
Oddsmakers from DraftKings Maryland Sportsbook have Maryland at +900 odds to make the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament.
With an 18-team league, the format for the Big Ten tournament is different this year. Only the top 15 teams in the standings qualified for this year's event, which runs from Tuesday through Sunday in Indianapolis. Seeds 10 through 15 will play in Tuesday's first round, then seeds 5 through 9 will enter in the second round, and finally the top four seeds will get the coveted double bye, entering at the quarterfinals on Friday.
Maryland already knows the time of its Friday game, 6:30 p.m. Eastern with coverage on the Big Ten Network. The opponent, of course, won't be known until after Thursday's second-round games.
Since joining the Big Ten in the 2014-15 season, Maryland’s highest seed in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was in 2015. Coach Mark Turgeon led UM to a 28-7 record and the fourth seed line in the Big Dance.
Since then, Maryland has made the tournament five times – as a fifth seed in 2016, a No. 6 in 2017 and 2019, a No. 10 in 2021 and a No. 8 seed in 2023, Willard’s first season in charge.
These odds are exclusive to BetMaryland.com, where the best Maryland sports betting promos await all year round.
Our top pick for Maryland for NCAA Tournament seeding is on the fourth seed line, at +230 odds, ranking just ahead of the odds that UM grabs a No. 3 seed (+260). With a hot run in the Big Ten tournament, Maryland could climb to the second seed line (+1650), or with an early stumble the Terps could fall to a No. 5 seed (+400) or even a No. 6 (+910). There’s almost no chance that Maryland falls any lower on Selection Sunday.
For now, Willard’s bunch will wait and see what Friday's quarterfinal brings. No. 10 conference seed Ohio State faces No. 15 seed Iowa on Wednesday, with the winner facing No. 7 seed Illinois on Thursday. Whoever emerges from that will square off against the Terrapins.
ESPN analyst Joe Lunardi, in his latest mock bracket released March 9, had the Terps as a fourth seed in the West Region. Jerry Palm of CBS also has UM as a No. 4 in his projections, but in the East Region. UM could still move up or down a seed line or two in those predictions, depending on the outcome of the Big Ten's first 15-team tourney.
UM has +5000 odds with Caesars Maryland Sportsbook to win the national title for the second time in program history.
