After a two-year stint at Belmont, guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie spent last season with the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team. But it seems Gillespie is officially following head coach Kevin Willard in leaving the Big Ten program, as the junior backcourt specialist entered the NCAA transfer portal this week.
BetMaryland.com broke down some odds on where Gillespie could go next.
Team | Percentage Chance | Odds |
Tennessee Volunteers | 52.4% | -110 |
Kentucky Wildcats | 15.4% | +550 |
North Carolina Tar Heels | 7.4% | +1250 |
Villanova Wildcats | 7.4% | +1250 |
Oklahoma Sooners | 5.4% | +1750 |
The Field | 11.1% | +800 |
These odds were crested for BetMaryland.com as part of our Maryland sports betting coverage. We have three SEC schools, an ACC blue blood and Willard’s new employer all vying for the Tennessee native’s services in 2025.
Gillespie has deep connections to the Volunteer State, as a native of Greeneville and after his two-year run with the Bruins. So it’s little surprise that head coach Rick Barnes and the Volunteers are the top landing spot for Gillespie’s services this offseason, at -110 odds, on our board. That wagering line would translate to a 52.4% implied probability If it were offered as a prop at Maryland sportsbook apps.
Should the Tennessee native opt to finish his NCAA career away from home, keep an eye on Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats, who check in at +550 odds. North Carolina and Villanova check in at +1250 apiece to do so.
Given the Tar Heels’ continued need for a playmaker at guard and Willard’s decision to leave College Park for Villanova, it’s understandable to have those two locales in mind when considering potential landing spots for Gillespie in 2025. But another SEC school could be a potential dark horse candidate, as the Oklahoma Sooners come in at +1750 to land the junior.
For now, what we know is that the exodus rolls on at Maryland, as the players that spearheaded the Terps’ first Sweet 16 run since 2016 have decided to join their now-former coach in leaving the Big Ten program in 2025. Gillespie is the latest to leave College Park after the 2024-25 basketball season.
