Few elements of modern society are as enigmatic as social media. The perks of having an online presence must be weighed constantly against the negatives that stem from being omnipresent online.
Regardless of how you feel about Facebook, Instagram and X (the website formerly known as Twitter), June 30 is World Social Media Day. That got us thinking about which states have the most interest in those sites overall.
BetMaryland.com, your source for the best Maryland sports betting promos, looked up Google Trends data for various major social media platforms – Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Reddit – to find out which states used social media the most over a 12-month period (June 12, 2023 to June 12, 2024). We averaged the interest of each social media site to rank the states by level of interest.

People in the Old Line State who are interested in Maryland sports betting might share their thoughts on various operators, or simply announce their delight that the Baltimore Orioles have won again that day. That, among many other reasons, might be why Maryland rates so high on our list of states that are most into social media sites.
Based on the digital tea leaves known as search interest totals, Maryland has the third highest total in the nation for search interest regarding social media sites. Maryland had a total of 77.8 points for internet interest on this topic.
Maryland’s total score ranked behind only California (86.0 search interest score) and Nevada (79.7). The states of Washington (77.7), Oregon (77.3) and New Jersey (76.3) trailed just behind the home of MD sports betting app operators.
Conversely, the state with the least interest in social media was Nebraska, at the bottom with a search interest score of 66.0, followed by Wyoming (66.3), South Dakota (66.7), Iowa and West Virginia (66.8 each).
The site with the most cache in Maryland was X (or Twitter) at 89 search interest. The “bird app” was alone at the top as the most popular social media outlet in 30 states and was tied for first in two others.
