With the winter grinding forward, there is no better time to beat the early year blues quite like a piping hot slice of pizza. That’s exactly what countless residents of the Old Line State choose to do daily.

Based on search interest totals, we can determine which topping is the favorite of Maryland residents both young and old among residents in the Land of Pleasant Living.

We ranked the top five based on search interest scores from a search conducted during a one-year period, ending Jan. 23, 2025.

Which Pizza Topping Do Marylanders Prefer?

At day’s end, Maryland residents have a soft spot for the simplest of all pizza toppings. Cheese pizzas scored a decisive victory for search interest score, with 69 points, to finish with nearly three times the total of the next closest option.

That option would be the other age-old pizza topping standard of pepperoni, which finished with a score of 25 points. That was three points ahead of the next closest contender, which was margherita pizza with 22 points during the period in question.

Finally, two additional toppings finished in the top five in Maryland, with vegan pizzas scoring six points. Sausage pies round out the Old Line State pizza topping quintet with four points, a mere 65 points behind the state’s top pie topping, which was the humble cheese pizza.
