Few American states have a love for all things crispy and starchy quite like Maryland. But where does the Old-Line State rank among states that are most enthusiastic about potatoes?
The International Day of the Potato is May 30. To celebrate, BetMaryland.com took a lunch break from reviewing Maryland sportsbook apps and used Google Trends to see what the most potato-loving states are. The list below is according to search interest scores for “Potato recipe.” We ranked each state based on search interest score, then found the top five favorite potato recipes in Maryland, based on search interest score.

Nationally, Maryland’s 100 score for spuds search interest topped the list. The home of Maryland sports betting ranked just ahead of Virginia (search interest score of 96) and Michigan (60) on our list.
Throw in Ohio (57 search interest score), Georgia and Pennsylvania (54 each), North Carolina (52), Texas (49) and New York (48 search interest score) and you have the full rundown on which 10 states love spuds the most. Idaho is the state most famous for producing potatoes, but it seems Eastern states are more interested in eating them, or at least searching the internet for information about them.

When it comes to potato recipe preferences, Maryland’s spud de jour is a tossup between the humble potato chip and French fries. Each of those American culinary staples scored search interest totals of 34.
The plain old baked potato is third with a search interest score of 12, followed by mashed potatoes (eight points) and hash browns (two) to cap off the top five as far as which twists on the carbohydrate-heavy plant Marylanders love the most.
