Maryland Ranks High In Junk Food Indulgences: Top Junk Foods Revealed

There are few ways to relieve stress that feel good in the worst way possible than indulging in a hearty amount of junk food. It could be a bag of potato chips, a solid block of chocolate or other guilty pleasures.

In the Old Line State, the home of Maryland sports betting, it appears that snacking is a serious hobby.

Despite the number of people interested in healthy lifestyles, junk food is still very common and popular in the United States. Junk Food Day is July 21, so BetMaryland.com found out which states like junk food the most. We used Google Trends to rank states based on search interest score for “junk food” from July 2 to July 9, 2024. We also named Maryland’s top five junk foods using the same method.

Overall, Maryland’s search interest score 74 tied Washington State for eighth nationally, ahead of No. 10 Nebraska (73 search interest score) and behind No. 7 Wisconsin (77)

Nationally, the leaders in junk food interest were Oregon, with a search interest score of 100. South and North Dakota were the next closest states with scores of 94 and 85, respectively.

Throw in Nevada at 84, California at 81 and Indiana at 78 and you have the full list of the states that are digging through search engines to dig up information about junk food.

One place to find junk food is at ballparks such as Camden Yards, and the Baltimore Orioles playoff chances are a hot topic in the state this summer.

As far as particulars are concerned, Maryland residents appear to have a fondness for chocolate and cake. The former racked up the highest search interest total in the state at 64, followed closely by cake at 59. Chocolate cake must be off the charts then.

Throw in candy at 44, cookies at 36 and chips at 13 and you have the full list of Maryland’s most searched-for junk foods in 2024. This list illustrates just how beloved such simplicities are in the Mid-Atlantic, from the shores of the Atlantic west towards Appalachia.
