Maryland Ranks High In Emoji Use: World Emoji Day

People young and old like to use a good mixture of emojis in their texts, emails and so on. Residents of the Old-Line State of all ages have an emotive of choice these days, perhaps to express a reaction to their Maryland sports betting wagers.

When it comes to emoji use, it seems like Maryland residents punch above their collective weight class, because the state ranks in the top 10 nationwide among states.

According to Emojipedia.com, the use of emojis has continued to rise in popularity. We measured a one-year span between July 8, 2023 and July 8. 2024. Using Google Trends, we found and ranked states based on search interest scores for “emoji.” Then, we found out which emojis Maryland residents search for the most, using the same criteria.

Nationally, Maryland’s search interest score of 75 (compared to other topics) for emojis is No. 9 on our list – perhaps not as often as folks statewide look for Baltimore Orioles playoff odds, but fairly often. That was just behind North Carolina (76 search interest score) and just ahead of neighboring Virginia (74).

National leaders were California (100 search interest score), Hawaii (89), Washington State (82), Nevada (81) and Utah (80).

When it comes to individual emojis, Maryland residents appear to be big fans of the crying while laughing image. That one had the highest search interest score of any emoji statewide, at 23.

The smiling while blushing emoji was the next closest one at 20 points, followed by the sideways crying while laughing emoji (17), the fire emoji (11) and the heart emoji, which rounded out the list with a search interest score of four.
