The MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, one of the nation’s most renowned cancer treatment facilities, has a medically reviewed post on its website regarding the benefits of abstaining from alcohol.

According to the site, alcohol increases the risk of several cancers, including liver, throat and breast cancer. And abstaining even for a month, which is the concept of Dry January, could bring benefits. That’s according to Maher Karam-Hage, M.D., a psychiatrist specializing in addictions.

“Usually, within 30 days, the liver can regenerate, or reproduce, cells that had been injured or died,” he said, as quoted by the Anderson Center.

Other possible benefits include improved sleep, better nutrition (because alcohol is considered empty calories) and improved mental clarity.
